Thailand is introducing a new airport baggage screening rule from 16 October 2026, allowing security officers to open checked luggage without the passenger being present if X-ray scans detect prohibited, suspicious, or potentially dangerous items. Any prohibited items found may be confiscated and will not be returned.
To ensure transparency, the entire inspection process will be recorded, and a Notice of Baggage Inspection will be placed inside the luggage after the search.
The new regulation, introduced by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT), is designed to strengthen aviation security and align Thailand with international safety standards.
Passengers are strongly advised to check their luggage carefully before travelling and avoid packing prohibited, hazardous, or suspicious items in checked baggage. Preparing your bags in advance can help prevent delays, inspections, and the confiscation of restricted items at the airport.
